Village Greens - What we've got and how to shop (again!)

As we enter national lockdown again we thought it was worth sharing some details of what we have in store and how you shop here at Village Greens. Some of you might be regular customers but for those of you coming to see us for the first time it might be helpful to see what we offer and when it typically comes into the shop. The main thing is we are open and well stocked!!

If you're new to Village Greens, we're a community owned co-operative in Prestwich and sell fresh, locally sourced organic produce, lots of vegan and gluten free products and refills of food and non-food items so you can cut down on waste.

So here's what's available..........

Fresh Produce

Our fresh fruit and veg deliveries are on a Monday and a Thursday and are typically here by lunchtime. Everything is organic, seasonal and as locally sourced as possible (of course depending on the season some items do have to travel a little further but everything is labelled with its origin)

Our Deli

Loads of delicious, locally sourced delights await but in summary here's what we generally get, where we get it from and when!

  • Vegan sushi from CB Sushi in Liverpool is delivered on a Saturday.

  • Vegetarian and vegan Middle Eastern and Mediterranean inspired cuisine including wraps, salads, dips and other delicious things from the Ottomen in Stockport come in on Tuesdays & Fridays.

  • Vegan cakes from the Black Cat Cakery in Ancoats on Fridays.

  • Indian snacks from Lily's Indian Vegetarian Cuisine in Ashton, also on Fridays.

  • Pies from the Great North Pie Company in Cheshire on Tuesdays and Fridays

Hoppers/Scoop Bins

The hoppers & scoop bins are basically self-service dispensers where you can take as much or as little as you need. We have recently added more hoppers in the shop so there's loads more items to choose from. Bring your own container or bag and fill it (don't forget to weigh it first) or we have paper bags (free of charge) or reusable bags/containers to purchase. See a full list of what's available at the end of this blog.

Bread

We source our bread from Trove in Levenshulme and it's delivered every day from Monday to Saturday. Delicious sourdough using seasonal flavours, pastries and lots of other goodies including brownies which come on a Tuesday.

On Sundays we source either from Masa bakery in Tytherington or from a local traditional Polish bakery. There’s also pittas from Pittanoor in Prestwich (Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays) and other “longer life” breads on the shelves (rye bread, pumpernickel, wraps etc) Plus bagels from the Traditional Bagel Company in the freezer.

Milk (and other dairy and non-dairy product) & Eggs

The dairy fridge usually contains milk, butter, yoghurts, cheese, cream etc. from suppliers like Longley Farm and Calon Wen. Longley Farm (Holmfirth) deliver on Wednesdays and the milk arrives on Mondays and Thursdays.

There’s also lots of non-dairy alternatives with products like sunflower spread, vegan cheeses and soya yoghurts. Plus there’s a wide selection of milks (oat, hemp, almond, soya etc). A recent addition is Oato oat milk which comes in glass bottles (which you can return to the shop) This is delivered on Wednesdays.

Eggs come from Knowl End Farm in Todmorden on Thursdays.

Store Cupboard & Freezer

There’s a huge range of tinned and packet goods available, as well as what’s in the hoppers. Generally there’s tinned vegetables, beans and pulses and soups. Tea and coffee, jams, honey, peanut butter (other nut butters available), breakfast cereals, crisp breads, baking ingredients, condiments, oils, herbs and spices, dried fruit and nuts, pasta, noodles, cooking sauces etc plus a well stocked freezer. Most of these items are delivered on Wednesdays.

Other things

We've also got a good selection of chocolate, sweets, biscuits and snacks, soft drinks and lots of local beers and vegan friendly wines.

Cleaning products & Toiletries

We stock everything you might need from toothbrushes to toilet paper and from lip balm to lotion. Many of our toiletries and cleaning products are kinder to the environment and cruelty free. And we offer refills on many items (see the full list below)

So why not come and see us or if you'd prefer to order online then all the details are here https://www.village-greens-coop.co.uk/shop

We're also stocking up for Christmas but more on that next time.........

See you soon 💚
